Although it’s been a while, I am still bitten by the clutter bug. Poor Mark, you could write a book about this lady! Isn’t that enough? He yells “Yes!” while he carefully inspects every item in his house. In five minutes, he will have everything packed into a bag taken to the charity shop. It’s a very high-traffic area because I purchase a lot of makeup, skincare, and other beauty products. I also get a lot of mail from my employer, so I fill it up quickly.
Let’s be real about colour
A red lip was my favourite colour back in the day. A berry lip! A fuchsia pink lip! They were all. It’s been years since I last wore one of these shades regularly. I feel like I’m hoarding them. Although I have kept several, I don’t now own multiple bold shades. Instead, I keep Glossier’s Generation G formulas that I can use to get bold-ish colours in sheer finishes.
View Expiry Dates
This is the easiest way to streamline your makeup stash. For more information, take a look at this What Wear article. The key takeaways from the article are that powder lasts forever, but creams and liquids need to be evaluated by taking a sniff and following your gut. Some glosses I tried smelled preeeeety funky.
Mix it Up
You can make it work if you have a product that isn’t working for you. This works only for liquid and cream products. However, if you feel that lipstick is a bit too dry, you can mix it with some balm. Don’t waste, don’t want and all that.
Create Your Palettes
Make your palettes by gathering any eyeshadow singles you already have. It is easier to store them, and you are more likely to use them. It’s now my favourite thing to use. If you’d like to see the contents of the palette, I have done a thorough run-through using swatches.
Narrowing down Skincare
The skincare area was a big area that required some organization in my drawers. It was best to narrow down my skin’s needs. It’s not something I will use. Instead, I have kept backups for items I already own in my routine and know I will eventually use. All other products have been donated to friends, or I donated them.
Decant It Out
You can decant a small amount of product from a large container into a smaller container. It makes clunky products easier to store and allows you to see what’s left. This is also a great step to take when lipsticks are melting and becoming difficult to use.
Multi-taskers
Glossier is another nod, but their Futuredew product has a multi-tasking ability that it can be used as both a primer and a highlighter. These multi-taskers are great to have in your arsenal, but once I’m done with my highlighters, I won’t buy any more. Instead, I will use this. You can reduce the amount of these products by marking off what they already do.
Find Your Weak Point
Foundations are my weak point. Foundations are my weak spot. I could live with just a few lipsticks and not feel deprived. GROAN. You know, I like the freedom to choose. I end up reaching for the same products over and over again, so it is time to downsize. An ideal world would have a lighter base for daily use and a medium-coverage one for special occasions. It’s not only two bottles (ONE DAILY!). But I am one step closer.
